Betley Court Manor – The Grade II Listed Building Restoration Project

Betley Court Manor House, a cherished 18th-century Grade II listed building, served as a residential home for 20 residents. After a devastating fire rendered the house unsafe, an urgent and meticulous restoration project was initiated to bring the manor back to its former glory.

To undertake this restoration, it was crucial to protect the entire site from the elements, allowing the building to dry out after being drenched by 40 firefighters. Continuous protection was needed to facilitate the restoration work without interruptions. George Roberts Ltd was entrusted with supplying all the necessary scaffolding, access, and weather protection equipment for this significant project.

Challenges and Solutions

Given the extensive fire damage, extreme caution was required to ensure the safety of the restoration process. Preserving the historical elements of the building was paramount, as is the case with any listed building restoration. The project faced several challenges, particularly in designing a temporary roof structure that could accommodate the numerous chimneys, necessitating additional beam work for support.

Innovative Scaffolding Solutions

George Roberts Ltd collaborated closely with the customer and their design team to specify the use of 1.3m X Beams for the support structure. By providing comprehensive technical data during the design phase, we were able to act swiftly and mobilise the necessary equipment to meet our customer’s program and budget requirements.

Equipment and Execution

UBIX Roof System: A complete UBIX roof system was deployed, utilizing Aluminium X Beams in both 750mm and 1300mm depths for added support, ensuring full coverage of the structure to commence restoration.

Delivery and Installation: Space constraints on site required precise planning. Our drivers used Hiab cranes to unload equipment at ground level, minimising disruption to the surrounding area. Our high stock levels and UK-manufactured beams allowed us to respond quickly, mobilising equipment within seven days to keep the project on schedule.

Project Highlights

Scaffolding Package: The scaffolding package, valued at £600k, included a full UBIX roof with 750mm X Beams, 450mm Deep Beams, 1300mm X Beams, Uniscaff Stair towers, Tube, Fittings, and Boards.

Quick Mobilisation: Thanks to our substantial stock and efficient processes, we met the tight timeline, ensuring the project’s overall estimated cost of approximately £6m remained on track.
